October is a good month to give the work an owner

October is a good month to give the work an owner.

The first week of a new month is honest. The diary is not full yet. The excuses from September have not had time to settle in. You can still see the work that followed you out of last month, because you are the one still holding it.

A quote that was promised and never sent. A customer who wrote twice. A folder named Final, and another named Final 2. A policy someone asked for in August, still sitting as notes in your head. A report you rebuild every Friday because no one else knows where the numbers live.

None of that is a strategy problem. It is an ownership problem. The work has a doer. It does not have an owner.

People treat October as a planning month. They open a new notebook. They write goals for the quarter. Then they go back to the same inbox, and the plan stays in the notebook. A goal does not move a follow-up. A named person does.

Here is a useful way to spend one hour this week. Do not plan the year. Look at last week.

Write down the jobs you touched that were not the work you are paid for. The reschedule. The chase. The “just checking this is with you.” The file you hunted for during a call. If the list is long, you are not behind. You are the system. Systems get tired. People who are the system get tired faster.

You do not have to hand all of it over. You do have to pick. One lane is enough for October.

If the leak is the diary and the inbox, that is administration. Someone else can hold the calendar, keep the versions straight, and send the note you meant to send at noon.

If the leak is customers waiting, that is support. A late reply is not a small thing. It is the moment a buyer decides you are busy with someone else.

If the leak is work that is “in progress” and nobody can say who has it, that is operations. A job without an owner, a next step, and a date is not in progress. It is hovering.

If the leak is a record no one trusts, that is the CRM. A pipeline you do not believe is not a sales tool. It is a list.

If the leak is a rule the team keeps asking you to repeat, that is a policy. Once it is written, you stop being the manual.

You still decide what matters. You still speak to the client who needs you. You still close the work that only you can close. You stop spending the afternoon being the place where everything waits.

October is long enough to test this. Pick one lane. Give it an owner. Look again on the last Friday of the month. If that pile is smaller, and you did not build a department to get there, you have your answer.

If you want a second pair of eyes on the list, book a conversation. Bring one week of your calendar. The gap is usually clear in twenty minutes.
